The Laughing Mermaid

 

Laughter is a tranquillizer with no side effects

 

and no regrets.

 

It’s how I get through my days,

a good laugh

and a glass of wine at noon.

Without these two things, I’d be in prison or dead.

 

I don’t mean to be so dramatic but these are the facts.

My mother was an addict and my father was a serial killer—

both died violently and this is the reason for my laughter.

I know you don’t believe me but it's true—we all have our secrets.
