The World will be Spared a Watery Grave, After This

Floods devastation destruction death disease 

rescue and relief

and I’ve seen the future of this country 

and it is not me or my children. 

we will be spared the watery grave, after all, 

the world advances and what can I do but stand here

and watch it sweep past like a river, 

or a wave that doesn’t rock me?

I could take comfort in my basic isolation. 

I could write poetry about it and send it to magazines. 

I could build a raft out of my mistakes.

I could wait until that day when someone asks 

what happened to our city and tell them 

we were spared the watery grave, after all.
