Why are we here?
After all, life is really simple;
we ourselves create the circumstances
that complicate it.
Without meaning to, we pass
through a phase of innocence,
where we are not already measuring
the consequences of our actions.
Without intending it, we enter a period
of learning how to make distinctions
—of good and bad, pleasure and pain.
It seems that the older we get, the more
there is to learn about loss.
The final lesson:
that the only thing
you can really count on
is your own death.
