The White Man's Burden
People do not really want
freedom,
because freedom involves
responsibility
and most people are
frightened of responsibility
A good man is simply one
who never inflicts pain.
Without a great deal of talent for suffering,
it is hard to be a saint.
Without great love,
it is
hard to give one's life for another.
Without food,
it is hard to feed the hungry;
without shelter,
it is hard to help the homeless.
Without medicine,
it is hard to heal the sick;
without education,
it is hard to help the ignorant;
without work,
it is hard to
provide for the idle.
And if you don't accept this view of things
too much as your own then
we
shall welcome you back when you return
