Power of persistence
A river cuts through rock,
not because of its power,
but because of its persistence.
I thought when I first heard that saying
I’d sooner be the rock than the river.
Without slowing,
I’d meet every obstacle head-on
And let my scars bear witness to my power.
Without stopping,
I would grow a shell like a tortoise
To keep out harm and nourish my strength.
But then I thought of what it means to cut through --
How a river carves its channel into stone
And how my own persistence
Can carve a path through adversity.
So today I start again.
I'll be the river, not the rock.
