On Keeping Our Human Values while Adapting to a Changing World
Accept hardship as a necessary discipline.
Be careful what you wish for.
If you want to keep your values,
you'll have to accept hardship and discipline.
Be prepared for the world to change around you.
Without a doubt, it will happen, like it or not.
There is no going back; look at that mountain of ice!
That glacier won't turn around, no matter how hard you pray.
It's melting and with its retreat we all have to adjust.
We'll have to live differently in order to survive in this new
place.
The new climate will require us (if we're smart) to make new laws;
our old institutions won't necessarily be suited for this new day;
we can't just do things the way they've always been done before.
We'll have to make some tough decisions, but that's just the way
life goes.
We'll have to be patient and open minded, and keep our human
values.
