But if you are beautiful at sixty
You can take no credit for beauty at sixteen.
But if you are beautiful at sixty,
it will be your soul’s own doing.
Without a mirror,
without any knowledge
of the story you are in.
Without understanding the purpose of your own beauty.
Things that were not beautiful when you were sixteen:
The sharpness of your teeth,
their
arrangement in your mouth,
the desire to bite down with them on someone’s skin;
that black hair falling out of your head,
the way your hair falls from the scalp
and covers your eyes,
the way it is alive
when you have been
dead for a long time.
